Lene
Rencontrer Lene serait donc un peu comme voir une aurore boréale : un tête-à-tête inattendu qui inonde de lumière un moment un peu sombre.
Lene est tanneuse et artisane du cuir.
1e rencontre. Un matin de mai 2019.
Alors en Islande pour tourner un documentaire, nous (avec Manfred) voilà arrêtés dans notre voyage sur le bord du fjord Eyjafjörður à Hjalteyri après l’annulation d’un rendez-vous matinal pour une interview. Moral un peu en berne.
Nous découvrons alors, quelque peu par hasard, la vie de cette ancienne usine de harengs qui nous semblait bien vide à première vue.
Lene nous ouvre son monde. Immédiatement ses mots et son approche résonnent en nous. Elle deviendra un des sept personnages clés de notre documentaire. Mais cela ne me suffira pas.
2e rencontre. Novembre 2022.
Me voilà de nouveau en Islande après trois ans et demi d’absence. Voyage de présentation du documentaire aux participants mais aussi besoin d’un gros break, de me ressourcer après 3 années et demie passées à démarrer ma nouvelle activité professionnelle de sculpteur sur bois et coutelier.
Quelques jours off, posés sur ce bout de Terre qu’est Hjalteyri. Une aubaine ! Presqu’une presqu’île. Cet endroit est, d’extérieur et au premier abord, comme figé hors du temps. Et l’atelier de Lene est une caverne. Qu’il me semble bon de pouvoir se retirer à l’écart de la cohue du monde moderne !
Lene connaît et approfondit depuis quarante ans les techniques ancestrales des peuples natifs du Nord autour de l’usage des peaux.
Dans notre souci de consommer rapidement et dans notre perte d’identité, l’Homme a oublié l’intérêt d’un certain nombre de matières disponibles. « Tout utiliser, respecter l’animal en employant tout ce qu’il nous offre. Un animal pris malencontreusement dans un filet de pêche ou un poulain mort-né, donner une nouvelle existence à travers un objet d’usage courant ou de décoration et surtout ne pas oublier cette histoire, cette vie. »
Ses mots ont tellement de sens à mes yeux. J’apprécie intimement sa démarche. Elle fait écho à mon approche et à mon usage du bois et du métal. Je me reconnecte aux sens de la Vie.
Et puis il y a ses gestes. Précis, vifs, incisifs, respectueux, enveloppants. Comme fusionnels. On sent que Lene porte beaucoup de bienveillance à chaque bête qui lui permet de réaliser son travail. Rapport privilégié et précieusement cultivé à l’environnement, plein de gratitude.
Les heures filent et l’idée d’apprendre à ses côtés m’apparaît comme une évidence. Une nouvelle aurore boréale née en moi.
3e rencontre. Mai 2024.
D’une durée de six semaines, ce séjour m’a offert un voyage intime au cœur de son univers créatif et de sa philosophie de vie. Partager son quotidien, celui de la tanneuse et de la créatrice d’objets d'art, a été une expérience enrichissante.
Lene est très respectueuse des animaux, magnifiant chaque matière pour que, à travers ses créations, chaque peau, chaque objet, porte l’histoire et l’âme de l’animal.
Elle perpétue des méthodes ancestrales, dans un profond respect pour ce savoir-faire. Chacune de ses œuvres porte aussi en elle la mémoire d’un monde passé, où l’homme vivait en accord profond avec la terre et toutes ses formes de vie.
Lene vit simplement, en symbiose avec son environnement, un art de vivre qui me touche profondément, comme un retour à l’essentiel.
Meeting Lene would therefore be a bit like seeing a northern light: An unexpected event that floods light at a somewhat dark moment.

1st meeting. One morning in May 2019.
In Iceland to shoot a documentary, we (with Manfred) have come to a standstill in our trip on the seashore of the Eyjafjörður fjord in Hjalteyri, after the cancellation of an early meeting for an interview. Bad mood!
Then, we discover, somewhat by chance, the life of this former herring factory which seemed very empty to us at first sight.
Lene opens her world to us. Immediately her words and her approach ring out. She will become one of the seven key characters in our documentary. But that won't be enough for me.
2nd meeting. November 2022.
Here I am again, in Iceland, after my last trip, three and a half years ago.
Travelling to show the documentary to the participants. Also because I need a big timeout, to recharge my batteries after 3 and a half years spent starting my new professional activity as a woodcarver and knifemaker.
A few days off, on this piece of land that is Hjalteyri. What a boon !
This place is almost a peninsula. From outside and at first glance, as frozen out of time. And Lene's workshop is a den. How good it seems to me to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the modern world!
For forty years, Lene has known and deepened the ancestral techniques of the native people from the North on the use of skins.
In our eagerness to quickly consume and our loss of identity, The human being has forgotten the interest of a certain number of available materials.
“Use everything, respect the animal by using everything it offers us. An animal accidentally caught in a fishing net or a stillborn foal?Give it a new existence through an object of everyday use or decoration! And above all do not forget its story, this life before. »
Her words mean so much to me. I deeply appreciate her approach. It echoes my way of using wood and metal. I reconnect with the senses of Life.
And then there are her gestures. Precise, lively, incisive, respectful, enveloping. As fusional. We feel that Lene is full of caring for each animal, that allows her to do her job. Special and preciously nurtured relationship with her environment, full of gratitude.
The hours fly and learning alongside her appears clear to me. A new northern light is born inside me.
3rd meeting. May 2024.
My last stay, which lasted six weeks, offered me an intimate journey into her creative world and life philosophy. Sharing her daily life as a tanner and creator of art objects was an enriching experience. Lene shows deep respect for animals, enhancing each material so that, through her creations, every hide and every object carries the story and soul of the animal.
She preserves ancestral methods, honoring this craftsmanship with great reverence. Each of her works also embodies the memory of a bygone world, where humans lived in deep harmony with the earth and all its forms of life. Lene lives simply, in symbiosis with her environment—a way of life that deeply moves me, like a return to the essentials.
